Is PS4 Most Appealing to Ex-Wii Gamers?

The dominance of the PS4 in the current gaming marketplace has been well documented. However, just how many of this install base are long-term PlayStation fans vs. new hardware adopters?

In a recent interview, PlayStation boss Andrew House revealed an interesting tidbit regarding their console’s success. He states that some of their users are not just new to PS4, but are new to the Sony brand altogether (being “Nintendo only” in the past and not owning a PlayStation previously). “Our big opportunity is to welcome back an audience much earlier in the lifecycle that possibly bought into the Wii previously. Whether it’s based on this is a really good all-round entertainment device for a family in addition to having great games, our consumer data suggests some of those people are already coming in now and that’s what’s contributing to the really great sales we’ve had.” Says House.

So what is the secret to luring in gamers from another console and transforming them into loyal customers moving forward? House believes it’s the “throw-back” factor of reintroducing classic content in new, innovative ways. Touting Sony’s success in utilizing this strategy in the past, he says, “We as an industry haven’t done that historically. We’re only just getting into our stride with people who now have been playing for 10, 20 years, who have a nostalgia factor, who want to see those franchises come back and be reinvented. That is a whole other area of exploration I would like to see PS4 to lead the charge on.”

The sales of the PlayStation 4 continue to close in on the ten million mark, which seats them as the definitive console leader over both Nintendo and Microsoft for the foreseeable future.
