Sony Finally Settles The Big PSN Security Breach Lawsuit

Remember the great 2011 PSN security breach? It happened shortly after the PS3 got hacked and there was a whole bunch of crazy stuff involving George “Geohot” Hotz and Anonymous and lots of other online drama. Anyway, the gaming community has pretty much forgotten it at this point. Sony said that no one’s identity had been stolen as a result of the hack and everyone came out OK. However, some users still weren’t satisfied. As a result, these users did the only thing they could think of… sued Sony’s pants off.

An agreement has finally been reached in the case, however, which has allowed basically ten million dollars in benefits for PlayStation users. What you will get will be dependent on whether or not you accepted one of Sony’s “welcome back” presents after the PSN hacking incident occurred.

If you didn’t, you will be able to choose two of these three benefits. Either a game for the PS3 or PSP, three PS3 themes, or a three month subscription to PlayStation Plus. You can choose two of the same benefit if you wish. If you did however, you will only get one of these benefits. People who did not receive a welcome back present will get benefits until six million dollars have been reached and then only the free month of PS Plus will be able to be claimed. People who already did will be able to claim benefits until four million dollars are reached and then the same applies. Unfortunately, PS Plus subscriptions only apply to people who have never been a PS Plus subscriber before. That, and the games you choose are from a limited list, mostly including games that were already offered as part of the welcome back program. These games include Infamous, LittleBigPlanet, Super Stardust HD, Rain, Dead Nation, Killzone: Liberation, ModNation Racers, and Patapon 3 .

Unfortunately all of these games are for the PS3 and PSP while the PS4 and PS Vita are already out so it might be too little too late.
