Inside Sherlock Holmes on the PS3 and PS4

While Robert Downy Jr. has made the exploits of Sherlock Holmes a household name (via his most recent film portrayals), this iconic literary detective’s roots stretch back well over a century!

Originally written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the famous sleuth’s adventures are once again being shoved into our mainstream pop culture (only this time it will be on your PlayStation instead of at the theaters). Olga Ryzhko of Frogwares recently posted an update to the PlayStation.Blog, where he touts Crime and Punishment as a “…Plot-driven crime drama…a pure investigation whodunit game that features brilliant detection, dreadful villains, and blood-curdling crimes. Six sophisticated cases, numerous suspects, right or wrong charges, possibility to fail or succeed, moral choices to influence the gameplay, and alternative endings — you play Sherlock Holmes at your own peril.”

As the title relies heavily on the original canon of the novels, some gamers may find themselves unfamiliar with the Holmes universe. Below, Ryzhko gives a quick rundown of four key areas that everyone planning to pick up the latest release should know about in Crime and Punishment :

  • It’s all About the Sherlock Holmes Universe

19th century England, Victoria Regina, Dr. John Watson, Baker Street Irregulars, Inspector Lestrade, and Sherlock’s long-suffering housekeeper Mrs. Hudson… you will be switching characters, and hey, you will even control Toby, the best nose of the British Empire!

  • It Forces You To Think Logically

Gameplay mechanics are specific to investigations and meant to convey what it feels like to actually BE Sherlock Holmes, the investigator, such as his ability to learn the details of an individual’s life simply by observing them, or to imagine and reconstruct a past event by merely studying the key features of a crime scene.

  • Each Case Offers You Real Freedom

Collect clues and tie the evidences together making your own deductions, coming to your conclusions. Make your own choices rather than enforcing justice by the book. Incriminate wisely though, as your decisions have an influence in the game.

  • There Are 9 Endings To a Case

It’s perfectly possible to accuse the innocent and have him or her sentenced to death — it’s XIX century, after all.

The new Sherlock games hit both PlayStation home consoles this September.
