Video Games Might Increase Stress

According to a recent study, video games might not be the best way to relax. Published in the Journal of Communication, the study found that people who watch TV or play games when stressed tend to feel feelings of guilt and failure.

The study observed the effects of ego depleted individuals. Ego depletion is a state in which a person’s willpower is exhausted making the worse at making descisions, more tired, and be more impulsive. Studies show that people tend to give in to temptations like fatty foods in order to help themselves feel better when ego depleted. Ever dig into a gallon of ice-cream when you are sad? That is ego depletion at work.

Unfortunately, these coping strategies do not always work. when playing video games or watching TV, ego depleted individuals felt restless and frustrated, and this actually applies to all media when ego depleted. “In times of smartphones and mobile Internet, the ubiquitous availability of content and communication often seems to be a burden and a stressor rather than a recovery resource,” one of the study’s co-authors said.
