As reported by MCV on Tuesday, September 9, Sony’s PlayStation 4 has become the second-fastest selling console in the United Kingdom next to its older brother, the PlayStation 2.
This is due to the PlayStation 4 having hit one millions sales in the UK after 42 weeks of circulation, which is comparable to the 50 weeks it took for the PlayStation 2 to reach the one million milestone in the same country. However, the PlayStation 2 itself is heralded as the best-selling console of all time, with 150 million worldwide sales. The console that runs away with being the fastest selling console in the UK is the Wii, with one million consoles being sold in 38 weeks.
The predecessor to the PlayStation 4’a competitor, the Xbox 360, stood as the most dominant console in the British market for eight years, according to to GameSpot, with hitting its first million sales in the UK after 60 weeks.
PlayStation’s UK managing director, Fergal Gara suggested that a key part of the PlayStation 4’s success was due in part of its new audience from previous Xbox 360 owners.
” We have certainly seen PS3 consumers come across quite hard and fast, ” he said, according to MCV. ” But a very significant proportion are people we have never seen on our network before.
And from their behavior and the types of games they are playing, it’s fairly clear that a big chunk of those have come across from Xbox, which is tremendous to see. And there’s a chunk that look like they’re brand new to gaming. And they’ve picked PS4 as their first serious gaming device, ” Gara continued.
” I would really like to thank all of our retail partners who have backed us so far. The work they have put in and the execution through the launch was exceptional, and without which we would not have got off the ground. We continue to work very well together and our plans for this Christmas are coming together quite nicely, ” he added.
