It appears as if some resolution is finally going to come to the most recent bit of drama surrounding Feminist Frequency creator, Anita Sarkeesian. Tired of the many death threats made toward her, Sarkeesian has filed a report with local police regarding death threats that she has received online. San Francisco police public information officer Albie Esparza has said that the information has been given over to the FBI, which has launched an investigation into the matter. No further details were given, as doing so could “compromise the investigation or the safety of the victim.”
I just want to note here, that the law classified Sarkeesian as a victim here, and threatening someone like this is, in fact, a crime. Threats to Sarkeesian extend well beyond personal attacks. Events that she has been do have had bomb threats called in. Posts have been made to 4chan, planning to seriously physically injure her. One could argue that these threats are simply made by loud and immature members of the gaming community drunk off anonymity, but if this has, in fact, gone to the FBI for questioning, some people are going to find that their anonymous words may have serious lifelong consequences.
