Ubisoft Defends Assassin’s Creed Unity fps Lock

Ubisoft recently revealed what frame rate and resolution to expect from the anticipated addition to the Assassin’s Creed series, Assassin’s Creed Unity . Following this news, the developer has reportedly been accused of keeping both the frame rate and resolution down to avoid the graphical advantage the PlayStation 4 has.

For those who don’t know, Assassin’s Creed Unity was announced that it was run at 900p and at 30 frame per second, with the the reason behind the decision being to do with Ubisoft opting to aim for platform parity.

Following a wave of criticism thereafter, Ubisoft’s world level design director, Nicolas Guérin, later told TechRadar that the decision to lock Assassin’s Creed Unity’s frame rate to 30 frames per second was to give the game a more cinematic feel, like with Ready at Dawn’s The Order: 1886 .

He also admitted that getting 60 frames per second is difficult to achieve, to the point where he thinks that the videogames industry is dropping to 60 frames per second standard because of this.

At Ubisoft for a long time we wanted to push 60 fps. I don’t think it was a good idea because you don’t gain that much from 60 fps and it doesn’t look like the real thing. It’s a bit like The Hobbit movie, it looked really weird, ” Guérin explained to TechRadar.

And in other games it’s the same – like the Rachet and Clank series [where it was dropped]. So I think collectively in the video game industry we’re dropping that standard because it’s hard to achieve, it’s twice as hard as 30fps, and its not really that great in terms of rendering quality of the picture and the image.

Assassin’s Creed Unity’s creative director, Alex Amancio, reiterated that 30 frames feels more cinematic, whereas 60 frames per second is good for shooters, but not so much for action adventure games. He also proposed the rhetorical question of if the game looks good, then why care about the number of pixels or the number of frames the game will sport.

30 was our goal, it feels more cinematic. 60 is really good for a shooter, action adventure not so much. It actually feels better for people when it’s at that 30fps. It also lets us push the limits of everything to the maximum, ” he told TechRadar.

It’s like when people start asking about resolution. Is it the number of the quality of the pixels that you want? If the game looks gorgeous, who cares about the number?

Ubisoft announced back in late-August that Assassin’s Creed Unity would be delayed by two weeks from its original release date, pushing it to Tuesday, November 11. The game was originally slated to release worldwide on Tuesday, October 28 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Ubisoft has also reassured that it’ll try not to delay the game’s PC release .
