Mother 3 Fan Translation Getting a Rewrite

Mother 3 Fan Translation Getting a Rewrite

If you haven’t played Mother 3 yet, you should. This sequel to Earthbound came out on the Game Boy Advance some time ago, and a group of fans labored to create a professional grade English translation. The patch has been available for a few years now, but Earthbound Central revealed that now, in late 2014, there are plans to do a rewrite pass on the script.

“A few months back, we released the translation tools for Mother 3 so that other translators could translate the game into their native language,” site founder Tomato said in a post. “The tools could also allow fans to create script hacks or the like… and almost immediately after the tools were uploaded, CrabbyRhys began a quest to polish and rewrite the English script!”

Luckily, it won’t take nearly as long for them to rewrite the script as it did for them to translate the script in the first place. All the tools are in place and no actual code has to be rewritten. Simply getting English font to display correctly was a monumental task when the fan translation was just getting on its legs.

Unfortunately, we have still heard no word on the release of Mother 4 , an ambitious fan project that is seeking to make a full Mother style game for the PC from the ground up. It was slated to release this winter but has gone silent from early on this year. Perhaps this announcement of the Mother 3 rewrite will get them back on track?
