Xbox Head Working to Improve Next-Gen Install Times

Xbox Head Working to Improve Next-Gen Install Times

While the Xbox One is a powerful piece of hardware in its own right, it’s not quite up to par when it comes to things like installing content to the hard drive. According to Xbox Head Phil Spencer, this is something that needs addressing in the near future.

In a recent interview, Spencer admitted this is an important aspect of the console’s architecture that needs tweaking, and blamed the problem on Microsoft’s reversal involving gamers maintaining an always-on internet connection. “It’s high on my priority list…The change to having to deal with an offline-only state meant that all the install code-flows weren’t as perfect as they could be.” He said.

Spencer currently has the Xbox Team performing a barrage of tests between their system and its PlayStation counterpart, in the hopes of determining exactly where the lag originates from. As of now, he says they’re still “…capturing the data,” and that he ultimately wants “…state-of-the-art in install times so people can start playing games as soon as possible.”

For those unaware, installing content to your hard drive has been known to significantly reduce loads times, but can result in some glitchy side effects (as GTA V ’s launch issues clearly highlighted last year).
