Far Cry Developer Tamps Down Resolution’s Importance

Far Cry Developer Tamps Down Resolution’s Importance

While pretty packaging has always been a way to catch people’s eye, in the world of gaming, it doesn’t always mean you’ll get what you pay for. At least, that’s what those behind the latest Far Cry thinks!

Alex Hutchinson is creative director on the project and recently expressed how the current 1080p debate is not something that fazes him in the least (nor should it be important to those who buy their games). “It’s certainly not something I care about in a game. It feels weird to me that people are cool about playing a sort of retro pixel game, and yet the resolution somehow matters. It’s like: is it fun, is it interesting, is it new, is it fresh, are there interesting questions?” he states.

To Hutchinson, substance takes precedent over presentation in many people’s minds already. Even though our Xbox and PlayStation consoles are pushing the graphical envelope in the next-gen, he feels gamers secretly ignore the looks of a title in their pursuit for something more.  Hutchinson says “Think about how things used to be–it used to be the graphics on the back of a box that sold a game. And even since the Xbox 360 and the PS3, that sort of era, like early 2000, I feel like 99 percent of the time it’s gone away.”

So which is it: graphics or gameplay? What really sells a game to you? Let us know in the comments section below!
