Latest on the Oculus Rift from Mark Zuckerberg

While some are awaiting the next evolution in VR technology with bated breath (and by some I mean me), those behind the scenes at Oculus want to remind folks this is a marathon and not a sprint.

During a recent earnings call, Facebook founder and current Oculus Rift owner Mark Zuckerberg spoke about the future of VR and where he sees the hardware going from here. “As I’ve said before, with Oculus, we’re making a long-term bet on the future of computing. Every 10 to 15 years a new major computing platform arrives… Virtual reality and augmented reality are an important part of this platform.” he touts.

A question on many people’s minds that remains unanswered is when a consumer-grade model will be made available. While this is still unclear, Zuckerberg suggests the Oculus Rift won’t’ become a must-have product in the mainstream world for quite a while. According to him, the initial install based is key. The Facebook CEO states it must first hit at least “…50 to 100 million units before it will really be a very meaningful thing as a computing platform…Maybe, I don’t know–it’s hard to predict exactly–but I don’t think it’s going to get to 50 or 100 million units in the next few years, right? That’ll take a few cycles of the device to get there.”

The impacts of the Oculus Rift have already been felt in the world of gaming, prompting the likes of Sony to develop their own headset technology (entitled Project Morpheus). We’ll bring you more once the street-dates of both Morpheus and the Rift have been officially confirmed.
