PS4’s Share Play Has a Sinister Secret

PS4’s Share Play Has a Sinister Secret

[ Note, 01/11/2014, 14:30 GMT: This article’s title is not its original. ]

The PlayStation 4’s “Share Play” feature, the ability for you to play a game with one of your friends who may otherwise not have a copy of the game in question, such as letting them watch you play the game without them physically being next to you not playing a local multiplayer match together, was released along with the console’s new 2.0 System Update .

The update itself has been experiencing problems in the days since its release, and to add to the pile is a report saying that the Share Play feature can give you the ability to also delete saved files of others. According to Gamereactor, the ability to give someone else virtual control over your console may lead to something rather disastrous, as it reports it has managed to delete saved in-game files off of its PlayStation 4 units. Even though Gamereactor claims that the other player won’t be able to access your console’s menus, there’s still the possibility that this could happen.

A workaround to this compromise would be to save your files to the cloud before setting up a Share Play session with someone else. In addition, you’ll still have the power to revoke the virtual controller from your friend should they be up to no good. Whilst it may not be particularly threatening to some, it’s nonetheless good to be aware that such a thing can supposedly happen, and prepare yourself accordingly.

Sony admitted back in August that Share Play sessions would only be limited to 60 minutes apiece , but you’ll still be able to continue using it thereafter–you’ll just have to repeat the process every hour.

Share Play requires PlayStation Plus in order for you to play someone else’s game. We’ll bring you more news on the feature should further information reach our ears.
