New Super Mario Bros Wii Sells Over 10 Million Copies

New Super Mario Bros Wii Sells Over 10 Million Copies

While the Wii U is still the worst selling console on the market, the Wii is still selling software quite strongly. One of the most loved and, for that matter, smallest Wii games ever produced, New Super Mario Bros. Wii , has just reached 10 million copies sold, nearly two years after the Wii has essentially gone obsolete. The game launched in November 2009 and became Japan’s fastest selling Wii game only a few months later. It continued to sell strongly throughout the Wii’s lifetime, especially considering that it was never available for digital purchase.

The strange thing is that its sequel, New Super Mario Bros. U , has not done nearly as well. In fact, it’s 3DS counterpart, New Super Mario Bros. 2 , also doesn’t compare with this Wii version. Super Mario 3D World , largely considered one of the best Mario games on the market right now, has sold two million copies, only a fifth of what New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold.

We don’t know what it is, but Nintendo has a hard time capturing the magic of their best-selling titles and consoles twice in a row. The Wii was far more popular than the Wii U, for example. Perhaps it’s just the case that casual Nintendo fans wait longer to re-up their consoles. Maybe in another 10 years, we will see Nintendo on top again.
