While some might suggestion the original Avatar film was an over-rated, CG fest that ran about an hour too long ( cough…ME….cough ), you can’t really argue with success. Case in point, we’re in for not one, not two but three more sequels in the future.
And director James Cameron couldn’t be happier! Taking a page from Peter Jackson’s playbook, these films will all be filmed simultaneously over the course of the next several years. When speaking with Empire, he teases fans have only witnessed the tip of iceberg thus far. “I can tell you one thing about them,” referring to the new installments “they’re gonna be bitchin’. You will sh*t yourself with your mouth wide open.” Cameron eloquently brags.
Speaking of Peter Jackson, many may not realize he played a big role in the making of the first Avatar (with partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens). Cameron says when “…Neytiri is holding Jake and she’s just brought him back to consciousness, the ‘I see you’ line was suggested by them. It might have been Peter who said that.”
The first sequel is due to hit theaters in 2016, with a new one released each year after that.
