Driveclub’s Troubles Have Left Sony Feeling “Embarrassed”

Driveclub had a bit of a sketchy launch when it released in October (foreshadowing the trend of botched launches that would follow it in a way), and the game’s troubles have left Sony rather embarrassed about its situation.

Actually, the boss of PlayStation UK, Fergal Gara, admitted that both Sony and Driveclub’s developer, Evolution Studios, are “ embarrassed ” over the game’s issues at launch. The game is now being used as an example of why titles should be delayed if they’re not ready for release, as the release of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Unity has already indicated .

In an interview with IGN, Gara apologised for Driveclub’s issues, especially since the game was marketed under the “4ThePlayers” PlayStation 4 slogan that’s been bouncing around for the majority of the year.

It’s a disappointment, ” he told IGN. ” When you lay your soul out as being ‘4ThePlayers’, then what you certainly don’t want is games that are not fully ready. It certainly wasn’t any ill-intention on behalf of the team. It’s ambitious as a game; they’re as embarrassed as we are and all you can do in those situations is say sorry.

In light of the title’s launch issues, Gara went on to say that the promised PlayStation Plus version of the game won’t be released until it’s absolutely sure that performance will be solid, so as to not experience a repeat of Driveclub’s launch.

We apologise to any players affected and are doing our damndest to make things right. So that’s what we’ve been doing and the game is pretty near-complete now. We don’t want to introduce the PS Plus Edition until we’re confident the servers can take the load.

Unleashing it on the millions of PS Plus users is the next step, but we want confidence in the capacity and concurrency figures. I’ll say again: we apologise and are trying to sort it, and we’ll hopefully learn from it so we see it less in future, ” Gara added.
