Study Shows Some Games Can Help Psychopaths Empathize

Psychopathy is described as the condition suffered by people who do not feel fear or empathy. They cannot consider the emotions of others or reflect on their behavior, and this makes them very hard to treat. Apparently, however, some video games can feed information to psychopaths that they wouldn’t otherwise notice, and this can help in their treatment.

The games in question train their players to consider stimuli that are not directly connected to their goals. When patients diagnosed with psychopathy played the game, they became more aware of the emotions of people around them.

Unfortunately, these games aren’t a catch-all solution. When antisocial patients not diagnosed with psychopathy played these games, their behavior worsened. However, data shows that when patients play games that are geared to treat a specific form of mental disease, they do improve.
