DOOM Creator Buys “Icon of Sin” Sculpture for Christmas

DOOM Creator Buys “Icon of Sin” Sculpture for Christmas

DOOM , Wolfenstein 3D and Quake creator and id Software co-founder John Romero acquired a gnarly–yet largely authentic–sculpture of the “Icon of Sin” level from DOOM 2 at the beginning of the week. He bought it from artist Jason Hite, a sculptor who themes his surreal creations around technology. Romero’s wife, fellow developer Brenda Romero, published images of the sculpture via Twitter as it was being packed into the back of a car for transport.

Hite reported to Polygon that Romero purchased the sculpture for $6,000 soon after its completion.

The sculpture was at the Copro Nason Gallery from Oct. 17 until Nov. 8. John Romero was actually the very first person I sent images and info on the Copro Show. He wrote back, ‘The sculpture is incredible, I love it! Great job. And I’m happy you really loved Doom.’ I didn’t hear anything else from him or the gallery so I figured he thought it was cool, but not [$6,000] cool, ” Hite recalled.

A few weeks later, out of the blue, John messaged me asking if the sculpture was still for sale. There was one other person who also expressed interest to me but had not confirmed yet, so I told John the sculpture was his! My six year old son Lucian and I met up with John and Brenda for breakfast while they were in Anaheim this past Sunday. We had a terrific time talking with them and their young son Donovan about all kinds of games.

Hite recounts the process behind the sculpture’s construction over on his own website , where work-in-progress images can be viewed along with Hite’s relationship with the DOOM franchise. Aside from a few elements, the piece is entirely hand-made.  It features various weapons collected from old action figures, including  “ slightly augmented ” HorrorClix figures, as well as “ possibly live ” .30 caliber bullets before they were replaced with dummy ammunition.
