It’s common knowledge now that the Kinect peripheral wasn’t a particularly well-liked as a gaming peripheral. Its successor would later improve upon the original, but the first Kinect has left some gamers quite sour.
However, the principle behind the Kinect (the notion of using physical movement to direct gameplay) is still an interesting one, and Acer have come up with its own answer to the Kinect.
The electronics company has announced a new variant of its well-received Aspire V 17 Nitro entry-level gaming laptop, one which supports hardware similar to the Kinect. Sporting Intel’s RealSense technology, this gaming laptop uses an infrared sensor and a laser projector to scan the laptop’s surroundings into three dimensions.
The Verge touts that the laptop’s camera is quite powerful in identifying detail. Apparently, it can detect all of the digits on your hands, your exact facial expression, and even what’s behind you as well.
The laptop is said to be bundled with apps that support the technology, such as Warrior Wave and 3DMe. Warrior Wave reportedly allows you to move every aspect of your players, and 3DMe is a 3D-scanning application.
Aside from the Kinect-like functionality, Acer’s gaming laptop sports a 17.3-inch, 1080p screen and a Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M. There’s also up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage space to boot, too. As icing on the cake, it also comes with a Blu-ray disc drive.
The new Aspire V 17 Nitro will be set to sell later on this month, although it’s not know how much the laptop will cost.
