New Microsoft Team Working to “Top-secret” Kinect Project?

New Microsoft Team Working to “Top-secret” Kinect Project?

A new job ad from Microsoft has hinted that the company is looking to improve the technology behind the Kinect. The peripheral didn’t receive the best of praises while it was still on the Xbox 360, but the Xbox One variant of the device has fared better (even if some gamers were put off by the first iteration and by the Xbox One’s initial always-on controversy).

Microsoft tried hard to push the Kinect while it was still attached to the Xbox One, but the device has nearly fallen off the radar since it was unbundled. Now it seems the company is trying again, as it has put together a new development team that’ll focus on the device, according to a career opportunity for a senior software engineer.

This new team was formed with one purpose in mind: “to push the envelope of today’s and tomorrow’s technology” while exploring “new ideas from the ground floor.” What’s even more tantalizing is that most of the stuff this new group will be working has been labelled “top-secret.”

Even though the ad mentions Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE, what really sells it about the group being focused on the Kinect is the following:

“If you’re passionate about the potential for Kinect to continue to revolutionize entertainment and are a seasoned software engineer with the skills to prototype and build the future of premium Kinect-powered experiences, we have a growing team of talented people who want to take entertainment into the future,” the job ad reads.

Whatever Microsoft is working on, its implied to be very experimental, so much so that those who wish to keep a comfortable and stable job are encouraged not to apply. Until further information is revealed otherwise, all we know for now is that something with the Kinect in mind is brewing at Microsoft.
