Valve Will Talk “Finalized” Steam Controller at GDC 2015

Valve Will Talk “Finalized” Steam Controller at GDC 2015

Following our previous report of Valve skipping Steam Dev Days in favor of this year’s GDC, it has been confirmed that the developer’s “larger than usual presence” will include the Steam Controller.

Kevin Wasielewski, the CEO of Origin PC (a Steam Machine partner), revealed some more details regarding the Valve’s plans to GameSpot at this year’s CES event. While he couldn’t say much, he teased that the Steam Controller (which has gone through a few iterations) has been “finalized,” and that they’re now “going into production.”

Wasielewski apparently didn’t clarify when exactly production of the Steam Controller would actually start, or whether the controler is currently in production already. He also confirmed that Valve will “announce more stuff” while at GDC, though he didn’t go into further detail as to what.

During the same interview, Wasielewski offered his thoughts on the term Steam Machine, saying that it’s “pretty much dead.” Instead of Steam Machine, which is what Valve’s hardware has been referred to since it was first announced, he feels the term “living room PC” is more appropriate to what the Steam Machine is. He explained that “ living room PCs have been around forever,” adding that the Steam machine wasn’t “anything new” in relation to this. Regardless of how he feels about the term, however, Wasielewski admits that there’s “ a legitimate demand and push for living room PCs.”

While Valve won’t be hosting Steam Dev Days this year, it has said that it would “certainly consider doing it again in the future.” This year’s GDC will be taking place on Monday, March 2 through to Friday, March 6 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.
