Project Hololens Deemed “the Next PC.”

Deeming something “the next PC,” is a bold claim, but that is precisely what the audacious people at Microsoft are doing when they talk about their new piece of hardware; something called Project Hololens.

The device itself appears to be one part Google Glass and one part Oculus Rift. Like the former, the headset will be free of wires and will include a CPU and GPU built right in. The effect will be something akin to Star Trek ‘s infamous holodeck, as it superimposes the unreal over the local environment and allows users to interact with it.

Currently, the device is only running a series of basic tech demos. Fortunately, it’s launching alongside the new Windows 10 operating system and should allow owners to run any software that other Windows 10 devices are capable of running. It’s a nice move, compared to the concerning lack of software currently announced for the Oculus Rift or Google Glass.

No news on a price point for the gadget yet. Until we know for sure how much we can expect to pay for another futuristic contraption, it’s hard to be excited. After all, who knows who can reasonably afford such a thing at launch.
