Starbound Receives its First Stable Update Since Early 2014 This Week

A Chucklefish Games designer announced on Twitter recently that the studio’s 2D side-scrolling survival adventure game, Starbound , will be receiving its first Stable update this week since reportedly March last year. Before that, however, the developer will be releasing updates for the Unstable version of the game. In the time since the designer’s announcement, Starbound Unstable has received two updates, with the second one hoped to be the last before a Stable update is delivered.

The Unstable version of the game allows for opting players to experience raw patches and updates as they come before they’re finalized and introduced to the Stable version of Starbound . The announcement of an incoming Stable update means that the main version of game will soon receive months-worth of content. Chucklefish Games indicated at the beginning of the month that they would be pushing to wrap things up in the Unstable version via the official Starbound website. According to another Starbound designer, these Unstable updates will go through final testing before their are implemented into Starbound Stable.

To participate in Starbound’s Unstable version (alternatively known as the nightly branch), players will need to open up Starbound’s Properties via their Steam library. As its name indicates, it automatically receives regular updates every single day. Once in Properties, go to the Betas tab and select the Nightly option from the dropdown menu. Further instructions can be found on the official Starbound support FAQ .

“The ‘unstable’ branch of the beta receives updates more frequently than the main stable branch and isn’t tested as thoroughly. It may also destroy saves or contain other issues, which will be fixed as they’re discovered and before they’re pushed to the stable branch,” the FAQ reads. “This branch is intended for people who want to test for bugs/issues. Only use this branch if you don’t mind potential game-breaking bugs!”
