Pokemon Fans Find a Way to Inject Data Into Recent Pokemon Games Using 3DS Browser

3DS browser exploits seem to be the latest wave of hacking in the 3DS world. These exploits use specially tailored sites to run arbitrary code that writes values to the 3DS’s RAM. The thing is, you can use these exploits to overwrite data into the game you are playing right now.

This was originally used to overwrite entire emulated games. You could, for example, pause a Game Boy Color game you were playing and visit a website to essentially overwrite an entirely new Game Boy Color game into the 3DS. We saw this in action as players wrote entirely working versions of Pokemon Yellow into their 3DS simply by pausing another Game Boy Color game and visiting a new website.

However, these hacks have gotten more and more sophisticated as time has gone on. Now, the latest hack involves leaving a space open in box one of your Pokemon PC in any of the latest gen Pokemon games. Then, you quit out and go to your 3DS camera. You use your 3DS camera to scan a QR code which takes you to a website which will immediately make your browser crash. However, what this is doing is writing data into the box 1 slot. When you then restart your Pokemon game, you will find the hacked Pokemon waiting there for you.

It’s unclear whether or not Nintendo will patch this exploit, but it is clear that you can’t take advtantage of it if you have a New Nintendo 3DS. The best part about this exploit? No hacking required. You don’t invalidate your 3DSes warranty or anything.

To see the exploit in action and to see a list of QR codes for several in-demand Pokemon, check out the original Kotaku article.
