Nintendo and DeNA Enter Partnership to Create Smartphone Games

Nintendo and DeNA Enter Partnership to Create Smartphone Games

As of today, Nintendo and popular smartphone game designer DeNA are teaming up in a business alliance to create all new games for smart devices. No games developed for current Nintendo systems, like the 3DS or Wii U, will be ported over to mobile devices. Instead, new games will be created and the entirety of Nintendo’s IP is up for use and exploration. So it’s likely we may see some sort of new Mario game on Android and iOS soon. Anyone up for a Mario infinite runner?

In addition to granting DeNA rights to Nintendo properties, Nintendo will acquire 10% of DeNA’s outstanding stock, and DeNA will acquire roughly 1.24% of Nintendo’s outstanding stock.

Nintendo is also planning on launching a brand new service which will take the place of its recently deceased Club Nintendo. This new service will tie together all Nintendo properties on consoles, handhelds, mobile devices, and PC. It is planned to launch sometime in the fall of 2015.

Nintendo is currently “losing” the console wars, with the Wii U being the worst selling console on the market right now. As a result, Nintendo has said that they will be looking into new avenues for their properties, with mobile games being just one.

We will bring you more information on Nintendo’s mobile plans as they become available.
