Valve Works Around 14 Day EU Refund Law

Valve Works Around 14 Day EU Refund Law

There is a law in the EU that allow consumers a 14 day period where they can return purchased goods for a refund. For those of us here in the US, that seems insane. Heck, for most of us in the gaming community, that seems insane. When you purchase a game off a digital distribution platform, you own it and that’s about it. No one has returned a game on Steam, right?

Right, because Steam has managed to circumvent this law in a particularly sneaky way. It includes wording in its purchase agreement that says by clicking purchase, you are choosing to waive your 14 day refund period. There is no other way to purchase games on Steam without doing this.

One has to wonder how effective a law is when all you have to do is say “by purchasing goods here that law doesn’t apply to us.” I mean, doesn’t that mean every outlet can just do that?
