Ubisoft Abandons Last Gen

Ubisoft Abandons Last Gen

Now that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is out, Ubisoft has decided that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3’s time is just about up. While they will continue to ship Just Dance games to last generation consoles, their flagship franchises will be kept to current gen consoles only.

“On Just Dance , we will continue to bring old-gen console versions,” Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said during an earnings briefing this afternoon. “But on the other products like Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, The Division , and the unannounced franchise, we will not have old-gen versions.”

Many of these games, such as the recently revealed Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Rainbow Six: Siege are also scheduled for PC release. Few plans, if any, have been made for the Wii U.

Ubisoft is basing this on hard data. Last year, 52 percent of all of its sales were on current gen consoles, while the year before it was only 15. It makes sense to push their production toward the sector where heavier sales are.

With the markets for the PS4 and Xbox One slowly growing, the last generation of systems will slowly be abandoned, and with no backward compatibility, we will likely see very few of these last generation games in the public eye once their replacements come about.
