Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Overhauls Its Boss Fights

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Overhauls Its Boss Fights

One of the biggest problems with Deus Ex: Human Revolution was that, even though you could play through the game through stealthing, hacking, or social skills, you always needed to whip out the guns for boss fights. This won’t be the case in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

“That was the main thing that was missing from the boss fights [in Human Revolution],” said gameplay director Patrick Fortier. “Thematically, I think they were interesting, but certain players found a challenge there that wasn’t really catered to them.

“There are ways to stealth them, there are ways to beat them in combat and there are conversations that you can have that maybe give you a different means of dealing with the situation altogether.”

“You can also decide to do it lethally or not,” said narrative director Mary DeMarle. “For Human Revolution, because of the way we designed it, [the bosses] always died in the cutscenes. You had no choice. But we rectified that in the Missing Link DLC, and we’ve rectified it in this game.”

Choosing to non-lethally deal with a boss means that you can then, later, use that boss to your advantage, possibly as an ally.

It’s good to hear that Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is going to address one of the biggest problems in previous Deus Ex games. To hear more about how the game will be addressing past issues, check out the full feature over at OXM .
