China’s Console Ban Now Officially Over

China’s Console Ban Now Officially Over

You may have heard a while back that China was ending its console ban. While this was true, the manufacture and sale of consoles within Chinese territories was still limited. Console makers could do business only in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone, and this held video game companies back from seeing major sales.

Luckily, all that is now over, as China’s Ministry of Culture has just released a statement explaining that video game developers can now manufacture and sell their consoles anywhere in the region. Being that China is one of the most highly populated regions in the world, this opens up whole new avenues of profit for AAA console developers, and for third party developers who publish on those consoles. This will also open up more work for localizers, who now need to localize each game into multiple Chinese dialects. In short, it’s very good news for the game business.
