Razer Owns Ouya Now

Razer Owns Ouya Now

A new chapter has begun in the story of the Ouya. The crowdfunded Android microconsole has a new owner. Razer has decided to buy the software and bring some of the team behind it onboard. Yay?

The Ouya was the first real Android microconsole, and people had high hopes for it. 63,416 did commit $8,596,474 to it on Kickstarter, and at one point the systems even appeared in Target stores. But attention waned, and now we’re here.

Razer says it hopes to continue the relationship Ouya already has with the Alibaba Tmall Box and Xiaomi Mi Box, while also making sure Ouya content appears on its Forge TV. Ouya boxes will no longer be made, but the Ouya storefront will live on. Eventually, it will become Cortex for Android TV, though.

Razer also hopes the acquisition will encourage people with Ouyas to transition over to Forge TVs. It will allow all Ouya content to transfer over, its platform will work with Ouya controllers, and it will offer discounts to attempt to make its hardware more appealing.

I suppose it’s sad to see Ouya’s saga end this way, but an unavoidable conclusion. I just hope my little box keeps working after Razer finishes the Cortex for Android TV transition.
