Xbox One Could Be Backward Compatible With Original Xbox

The interesting thing about the Xbox One’s backward compatibility feature is that what it is essentially doing is running an Xbox 360 emulator. That emulator then just plays whatever 360 game it wants to play, making it a relatively simple process all things considered.

But if Microsoft is coding emulators for the Xbox 360, couldn’t they do the same for the original Xbox?

Good question, and a question that Phil Spencer was asked on Twitter, no less. The exchange went like this:

‏@HadleeSimons: @XboxP3 very silly question, but if X1 essentially has 360 emulator, how much work would go into making original Xbox titles BC?

Phil Spencer: @HadleeSimons I don’t think it’s silly. I ask the BC team this question a lot. Need to finish 360 BC for now.

For now, eh Spencer? Does this mean that we could be seeing original Xbox compatibility on the Xbox One? This would make it the most backward compatible system ever devised.
