Sony Makes an Exciting New Acquisition

Sony announced today that an acquisition it’s been working on for a while has at last been finalized. Softkinetic Systems S.A. is now officially a subsidiary of Sony.

Softkinetc has developed a type of range and motion sensor technology that it calls “time-of-flight.” ToF  sensors rapidly track light as it leaves its source, bounces off of an object and returns; supplying accurate, moment-by-moment data on its object’s distance and movement. It’s reported that Sony is combining this technology with some its own existing tech, and there’s a lot of buzz about when we’ll see this used for PlayStation VR.

As of now the only PS VR accessories that we’ve seen in action are the PlayStation Move batons, which seem awkward compared to the elegant and ergonomic Oculus Touch.  No doubt Sony will be thinking about what it can do with a lightning fast, Kinect-like motion capture system to take its virtual reality platform to the next level.
