Here's some rather exciting news for people hoping for some backwards compatibility on the PlayStation 4. It turns out Sony's already been secretly working on PlayStation 2 emulation. Eurogamer discovered the PlayStation 4 versions of Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, and Star Wars: Racer Revenge actually run due to PlayStation 2 emulation on the PlayStation 4, and Sony confirmed it is working on the technology.
Sony's statement to Wired said, "We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation." Three of the four Star Wars retro downloads included in the Star Wars Battlefront PlayStation 4 bundle appear to run using this very technology.
Naturally, Sony had no other comment about the prospect other than to say it is working on it. Perhaps we'll see PlayStation 2 Classics come to the PlayStation 4 as a result of this work!
