Steam Abandoning Flash Sales

Steam Abandoning Flash Sales

Steam Sales are a large part of what makes the platform so appealing to its user base. Using some form of magical number sorcery, Steam is able to provide games to players at a ridiculous discount. Now, it seems, that Steam’s flash sales, which are some of the most impressive discounts offered for short periods of time, will be disappearing as early as the Fall Sale. Instead, games will only have one discount price throughout any single Steam Sale.

Valve states that it is doing this to make promotions more accessible to more people. There’s now no need to wait until the final day of a sale to ensure you’re getting the best deal on a game. Another reason, though not explicitly stated, for this change may be to reduce stress on Steam’s new refund system. If a game goes on sale, and then receives a bigger discount as part of a flash sale soon after, players are able get their game refunded before rebuying it at the better price. While this is a legitimate use of the refund system according to Steam’s policies, it’s probably a bit of a mess during the company’s highly popular sales.

Valve says it will still be promoting its top games on the front of the store page for around 24 hours before giving other games visibility. It is unclear at this point if gamers will find these changes to be a good or bad thing for their Steam experience.
