Microsoft Files Phantom Dust Patents

Microsoft Files Phantom Dust Patents

Phantom Dust was an action and strategy game originally released on the first Xbox console. It’s become a bit of a cult classic, since then. Back at E3 of 2014, Microsoft announced that they would be bringing the game back as a reboot. Unfortunately, the developer, Dark Side Games, later closed its doors. Microsoft promised that the game was still in the works, but we’ve heard pretty much nothing about it since then. That is, until now.

A patent was recently filed and discovered indicating that Microsoft is, at the very least, taking some action regarding the title. While it’s no guarantee about progress or, indeed, whether or not the game will actually release, it’s nice to know that Microsoft is at least interested in protecting the property.

The patent in question was filed as a Class 9 and a Class 41. The former denotes game software while the latter is used for online games software. The original game was multiplayer, so that could have something to do with it. That said, a Class 41 patent is required for any online functionality, so it could be as simple a thing as leaderboards. As has already been the case, it looks like we’re still in the dark on this game.
