Revenue From The Witness Blows Away Expectations

Revenue From The Witness Blows Away Expectations

I was getting a little nervous about about The Witness . The game took nearly seven years to make and word on the street says it is being pirated hard. Developer Jonathan Blow had to blow off a little steam on Twitter, commenting that while he’d rather not use DRM in his next game he may be forced to do so. Critically, the game seemed to be doing very well and has some impressively high review scores. The scales seemed evenly balanced and, wanting this game to succeed, I’ve been itching for a bit of good news to help it get ahead.

That good news came today as Blow had something more positive to tweet about. The Witness is making lots of money. In fact, it’s already earned more in its first week than Braid earned in its first year. Pirates aside, The Witness blew the lid off of our expectations and we have every reason to believe that Blow’s next game will be bigger and better. In a follow-up tweet Blow states that “…we’ll be able to make the next game at a comparable budget level (maybe bigger, we’ll see!).” Here’s hoping the pirating issue blows over and more favorable winds continue to blow Blow’s way.
