Dragon Quest Builders a Smash Hit in Japan

Dragon Quest Builders a Smash Hit in Japan

Dragon Quest is a pretty big deal here in the West, but it’s a huge deal in Japan. The Japanese workforce takes a statistically measurable dip on new Dragon Quest games’ launch days. Dragon Quest Builders is the latest game to come out and it’s a kind of quirky, Dragon Quest themed take on Minecraft done in a very Japanese way. Square-Enix did some really creative marketing for the game before it came out on January 28, and it looks like it really paid off!

Cumulatively, Dragon Quest Builders has sold over 372,000 copies according to the Media Create report. What’s surprising (actually it’s only surprising to us in the West) is that the biggest platform for this game is the PS Vita. The PS Vita version sold 178,016 copies, with the PS4 version coming in second at 141,369 copies. Hardware sales were given a huge boost as well, and at the top of the hardware chart sits the might PS Vita, selling 45,114 units. As big as Minecraft is here in the states, you can bet we’ll be seeing Dragon Quest Builders in the near future.
