Destiny Update Brings Change to the Crucible

Destiny Update Brings Change to the Crucible

Oh Destiny . You were so full of promise, and now you’re just hanging by a thread. Bungie isn’t feeling so confident in its product these days. Back in the day it was teasers and expensive commercials. Now, we’re getting emails asking why we’re not logging in to play Destiny anymore. I suppose that’s a step in the right direction, considering a lot of long-time Destiny players have been walking away. Bungie’s new CEO is determined to revive your Guardian for the second time, and to do that he needs to know what needs to be changed.

One thing fans have been vocal about recently is the recent changes made to Crucible matchmaking, and come February 9 Bungie will be rolling out some pretty significant changes in the Crucible, just in time for the Valentine’s Day event Crimson Days. For starters, in 3v3 playlists players will no longer spawn with special ammo. If you’re the type who likes to sprint straight to a high-point and get in some opening snipes, you’ll have to stop by a special ammo crate first. 6v6 playlists and rumble will remain unchanged in this regard. If you play Destiny alone (like I do), you’ll be glad to know that Freelance playlists have been added, where no fireteams are allowed. No more joining a game and facing off against a well-organized clan that wipes the floor with you and your team.

Another big change is coming; it won’t be apparent to many of you, but for others it will change crucible gameplay significantly. The feature is called “Damage Referee.” The ref is basically there to make sure that those with awful connections won’t have distinct advantages over players with better connections. No more getting the jump on someone or disappearing behind cover before hits register. If you’re playing in the crucible with a poor connection, networking engineer Paul Lewellen all but guarantees you can “Expect to lose fights a lot more often…” Maybe I’ll see you in the crucible, guardians.
