Infamous Chinese Pirating Syndicate Taking a Year Off

Infamous Chinese Pirating Syndicate Taking a Year Off

A short while back we heard from a group of Chinese hackers that call themselves “3DM” as their leader predicted that within two years pirating the major AAA games would become impossible. Apparently encryption technology has become too sophisticated and is taking too long to crack. Now the pirating syndicate, which has been a pretty big deal when it comes to cracking major games, has announced that it’s taking a little break. According to its leader, Phoenix, “We just had an internal meeting. Starting at the Chinese New Year, 3DM will not crack any single-player games.”

Apparently the plan is to wait it out and see if other hacking groups make progress with DRM protection that they can capitalize on. It also seems like they’re going to be monitoring sales to see if they grow over the course of their hiatus, which should be interesting. Honestly, if things go their way I can imagine that a year from now they’ll come back with gobs of “evidence” supporting the notion that piracy doesn’t affect game sales one way or another. In the meantime, it seems like those of you who were planning to download a free copy of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided might be out of luck.
