There’s a Sonic the Hedgehog Movie on the Way

There’s a Sonic the Hedgehog Movie on the Way

Sonic has been going downhill for the past few years, and that’s really sad. Sega’s prolific mascot used to reign as one of the ultimate representations of a successful brand, right up there with Mario and Crash Bandicoot. Lately, though, Sonic’s face has been slapped on some pretty crappy games. Now we’ve heard that there’s a movie in the works. That’s pretty much all that we know, actually. Sega and Sony are working together on it, it’s going to be a mix of live-action and CG animation, and it’s due out in 2018.

If they do this right and just make it a kids movie without trying to be cool or edgy, there’s a chance this might not suck. There was a Sonic cartoon back in the day, and I loved it as a kid. One time the show ran a contest. For two weeks you had to get up before school and watch Sonic (no problem), and at the end of each episode you had to write down the moral / ethical lesson that Sonic taught you. I remember one episode specifically dealt with Sonic befriending some very slow-moving sloths who ended up helping him in a big way, and the lesson was not to disregard people who do things differently than you do. Check it out below!

Anyway, after writing down the life lessons, I had to go to the mall and drop them all off, sealed in an envelope, in a big Sonic contest box that stood outside of the video game store. Weeks later I found out that I had won! I was probably the only kid who actually entered, but I was psyched. I got two Sega Genesis games, balloons, a t-shirt, and a good-sized Sonic doll. What’s my point? Even if the Sonic movie ends up sucking, keep an eye out for any contest opportunities. If the prizes are at all comparable to what I won back in the day, you’re going to want to enter.
