Gabe Newell Has an Oprah Moment, Gives Away HTC Vives

Well this was a stunt, wasn’t it? During Vision Summit 2016 – a conference for developers and creators centered around emerging AR and VR technology – Gabe Newell appeared on-screen to a room full of developers to give a special message. Newell is the co-founder and managing director of Valve, and he wanted to let the developers know that Steam VR would be integrated and optimized for Unity. But that wasn’t all, Newell went on to say, “I get to have my Oprah moment: All the developers at the Vision Summit get their own Vive, so you get a Vive, and you get a Vive, and you get a Vive!”

I added that exclaimation mark to the end but you’ll see in the video below that he didn’t really deliver with a trademark, frenzied, Oprah enthusiasm. It’s the sentiment that counts, though, and no doubt it left every summit attendee talking about the Vive and Steam VR. It was a brilliant move, and no doubt this will inspire more than a few studios to get working on a project for Steam VR that they might not have committed to otherwise. The move wasn’t cheap, so hopefully it pays off in the end.
