Sony Has Shipped an Unbelievable 40 Million PS4s

Sony is thriving under the leadership of Kaz Hirai, who seems to have taken the company in a much more aggressive direction. Sony had an incredibly profitable year (its smartphone division excepted), and a large part of that success is due to the home console titan that is the PlayStation 4. The PS4 has officially shipped over 40 million units globally, up from the 35.9 million celebrated back in January. Analysts have had a lot of fun pointing out that the PlayStation Network on its own generated more revenue than the whole of Nintendo over the same period of time.

Overall Sony saw a 329% increase in its operating income, which is nothing to sneeze at. Sony is making a comeback and returning to its former glory. Hopefully it’s not getting drunk off its success. I have a bad feeling that the PlayStation 4 Neo is a project borne out of audacity and not out of practicality, but I suppose Sony has the expendable income to take the hit if it doesn’t sell well at this point. There are plenty of killer PS4 exclusives on the way, and PSVR is primed to become the consumer’s choice for virtual reality in 2017. I have a feeling that this time next year we’ll be looking at another optimistic earnings report.
