HTC Vive’s Revive Bypasses Oculus’ Security

HTC Vive’s Revive Bypasses Oculus’ Security

There’s some good news for people who chose the HTC Vive over the Oculus Rift and bad news for Oculus. A bit of software that allows people to get around the limitations that keep Oculus exclusive games exclusive called the Revive has arrived. Initially, Oculus put together a patch that was supposed to kill the Revive exploit, but it’s risen from the dead and this time, it’s even more powerful.

Here’s what’s happened. People with an HTC Vive could use the Revive software to get around code-signing checks that would make sure the game was actually being played on an Oculus Rift. With Oculus 1.4, the plug-in’s possibilities were eliminated, as “platform integrity checks” were among the various fixes. The hack was outwitted. But this was only temporary, as Libre VR, the creator, updated the workaround to restore the exploit.

This time, it’s even more powerful. People with an HTC Vive can play Oculus exclusive games with Revive. Moreover, it now goes around a check that would make sure you actually and legitimately own the game. Has it taken things too far? The safe answer is yes, but at least the exclusives are temporarily not-so-exclusive. The DRM has been defeated.
