Minecraft Smashes Through 100 Million Sales Milestone

Minecraft Smashes Through 100 Million Sales Milestone

Microsoft and Mojang are celebrating a special occasion today. Minecraft has blown past the 100 million sales milestone; as of yesterday the sales count was at 106,859,714. That’s absolutely mind-blowing, but I doubt any of us expected anything less. Minecraft is updated with new content regularly, and it has proven to be popular with gamers of all ages. As part of its press release, Microsoft included some interesting graphs and statistics that are worth noting.

I thought this was kind of fun: “If each person that bought a copy formed a nation, it would be the 12th most populous in the world, behind Russia, Japan, and Mexico.” They also pointed out that since the beginning of 2016, an average of 53,000 copies of Minecraft have been sold per day. It’s also interesting to note that in North America and Europe, the number of players playing on consoles compared to mobile devices is dead even (a 1% difference excepted). In Asia, however, console players only make up 19% of the Minecraft player base, while PC player compose 30%, and the 51% of players are on mobile devices. At any rate, congratulations to Microsoft, and hooray for Minecraft . Here’s to another 300 million copies and the chance to surpass Tetris as the best-selling game of all time.
