We love Overwatch, and so do 10 million of you lovely readers out there. I’d be a little embarrassed to admit how many hours I’ve already sunk into Quick Play mode, so I’ll keep that bit of information confidential. Suffice to say, I don’t think I’ll ever get bored with this game, and that one mode is all I need. Blizzard isn’t content to rest on its laurels, though, and Competitive Mode is on the way. With it comes a variety of balance tweaks and rewards.
So far the coolest reward that’s been teased for strong performance during the competitive season is the golden weapon skin. Every hero in the game has been given a golden skin variant for his or her weapon, and these will only be awarded to top competitors. You won’t find any of these suckers in a loot box, and therein lies the appeal. Customization is a huge part of fun once you learn who your favorite heroes in Overwatch are, but unlocking the legendary skins you want is never a sure thing. When you see someone rocking out an epic Tracer outfit, you know they either got a lucky loot box or amassed enough gold coins (through random loot box drops) to buy the thing. Golden weapon skins will be a much rarer mark of honor – earned and not bought – and I dig that.
