The Best GameCube and Wii Emulator Just Got Better

The Best GameCube and Wii Emulator Just Got Better

Emulation is a tricky business. There’s no denying that as hardware continues to advance on a damn-near-monthly basis, playing games from past generations on our computers is much more appealing than keeping the consoles themselves. Emulating a console’s framework and OS is tough, though. To this day, we still don’t have a perfectly functioning N64 emulator. Thankfully, the GameCube and Wii were built upon a framework and architecture that are much easier to crack, and for years now the Dolphin team has been on the leading edge of the GameCube and Wii emulation scene.

Their latest release, Dolphin 5.0, is a giant leap in efficiency and convenience. In the past, every iteration and upgrade for the Dolphin emulator has seen a give and take when it comes to features, emulation accuracy, and speed. More features and cheats meant more audio / visual bugs. Alternatively, more accurate emulation meant slower speeds and frame rates. Version 5.0 is the miracle update that lets users have their cake and eat it too. Here’s a quick rundown of features:

  • Stereoscopic 3D output

  • zFreeze support (now games like Rogue Squadron II run near flawlessly)

  • Better and faster CPU emulation

  • Revamped netplay for online play

  • And much more!
