Breath of the Wild Needs to Sell 2 Million to Turn a Profit

Last night, Nintendo had its 76th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders. Exciting, right? Rumors were going wild leading up to the meeting, even though we all knew better. Perhaps we’d get some details about the NX? Maybe Nintendo would give a more specific release window for its next console and let something slip? If nothing else, maybe there would have at least been release window for the impending mobile games? None of those that came up, but that’s not to say we came away empty handed. We learned a little something about the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild ‘s prospects.

According to Shigeru Miyamoto, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild needs to sell at least 2 million copies worldwide in order to make back development costs and turn a profit. Miyamoto apparently also confirmed, according to NintendoLife , that Nintendo will consider Breath of the Wild a hit if it manages to sell 300,000 copies in Japan.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is set in the largest game world that Nintendo has ever created. The credits list contains over 300 people, 100 of whom are still working on the game. It was also noted that smaller, future titles may benefit from BotW ‘s enormity by sharing resources from its five-year development. While all this is not as sexy as an NX reveal, it is interesting.
