Use Your Xbox Live Gamertags or Lose Them

Use Your Xbox Live Gamertags or Lose Them

Do you like your Xbox Live Gamertag? Of course you do. You wouldn’t have chosen than moniker if you didn’t. Well, you better be ready to do what it takes to keep it. Microsoft has updated its service agreement, which means your Gamertag now has an expiration date. Use it or lose it!

Fortunately, it’s a rather generous period. The exact wording in the Xbox Services agreement is as follows, “You must sign into Xbox Services at least once in a five-year period,” the agreement reads, “otherwise you may lose access to the Gamertag associated with your account and that Gamertag may become available for use by others.” If you have Xbox Live Gold, that won’t be a problem, since you’re going to be logging in twice a month anyway to get your free games. For everyone else, that still shouldn’t be too much trouble.

Just know Microsoft will make good on that threat. Remember, it’s released unused Gamertags twice before. The first time was in 2011, and earlier this year about one million Gamertags were opened up to Xbox Live Gold members. Keep your online identity in your own hands by regularly logging in.
