Nintendo Reports Big Q1 Losses

Nintendo Reports Big Q1 Losses

Earlier today Nintendo posted its first-quarter financial results and… it doesn’t exactly paint a pretty picture. From April to June Nintendo posted a net loss of 24.5 billion yen (roughly $208 million). During the same period last year Nintendo saw profits, so this year’s numbers are disappointing to say the least. The slump is due largely to disappointing hardware sales. From April to June Nintendo only moved 220k Wii Us. To date the console has sold an anemic 13 million units worldwide. The Wii, by comparison, sold well over 100 million units.

Nintendo isn’t looking back, though. It’s looking ahead and planning big things for the NX and its mobile division. The former is the subject of some hot debates right now after the supposed reveal that it would be a Tegra-powered handheld unit, while Nintendo’s mobile games are projected to bring in some much-needed revenue. The initial success of Miitomo and smashing success of Pokemon Go bode well for Nintendo in that regard. We’ll have to wait and see how bright Nintendo’s future looks when it reveals the NX (hopefully) sometime in the near future.
