NX Could Be Compatible With Nintendo Mobile Games

The floodgates have opened, and now we’re getting pounded with torrents of supposed NX leaks. Eurogamer took the lead with its initial break that the NX would be a portable handheld / hybrid device, and since then pretty much every major outlet has come forward with its own spin on things. Everyone seems to be reporting the same batch of rumors, and Digital Foundry most recently provided an in-depth look at the Nvidia Tegra X1 GPU that is reportedly powering current NX software development kits. Now it sounds like a Tegra chip won’t be the only thing the NX has in common with some mobile devices.

A recent article from the Wall Street Journal is reporting that “…the NX would be a handheld-console hybrid that would be compatible with its own smartphone games.” With this bit of information, as with the initial leaks from Eurogamer, we’re forced to accept or deny its validity based on the reputation of the source. Obviously the WSJ can’t reveal its sources due to strict NDAs from Nintendo, but we have to believe that a publication so highly esteemed wouldn’t risk reporting information that hadn’t been thoroughly corroborated, or from a source who hadn’t been thoroughly vetted.

If this turns out to be true, then, it would be an interesting move for Nintendo. I’m not sure if this would speak more to the quality of its planned smartphone games, or else raise some questions about the NX’s OS. Personally I think an Android-based OS is out of the question. I wholly expect Nintendo to have its own, natively-developed OS for the NX, but we won’t know for sure until the Nintendo decides to speak for itself. Let’s hope there’s a Direct coming our way – and soon.
