Pokemon GO was one of the wildest phenomenons of this generation. It was (and still is for many) the new Tamagotchi. Within days Pokemon GO had become the fastest mobile game to reach the number one spot on the Google Play store, as well as the highest grossing app on the iTunes Store – this, despite being a free-to-play game. For 74 days Pokemon GO remained the highest grossing app, but today it has been dethroned.
Clash Royale has returned to the number one spot on the iTunes Store as the highest grossing app. This is likely due to a number of factors. Pokemon GO ‘s active daily users have been consistently declining in recent weeks. Monetization has slowed down quite a bit as well, as most of the items available for purchase aren’t as useful in the late-game. Niantic, Google, and Nintendo are no doubt assessing the state of things and will find a way to cleverly monetize the game in the future, but for now, Clash Royale will keep the number one spot warm.
